Our quest for a diversity of perspectives, experiences and skills begins with the Abbott internship program, which attracts hundreds of young people each year.
An accounting student at DePaul University in Chicago, he had been inspired to apply after meeting Abbott’s Joe Kosinski at a presentation to the Midwest Association of Hispanic Accountants. Later, Delgado, a member of the student group, paid a half-day visit to the Abbott campus.
Right from the start of his internship, when Abbott Chairman and CEO Miles D. White addressed the interns, Delgado found the program “very organized and integrated into the priorities of the company.”
CHALLENGING WORK FOR INTERNS
To his delight, Delgado’s work as an intern proved challenging. At Abbott, all assignments for interns are based on current priority projects at the company. At the time, Abbott was purchasing another company, and the young accountant worked on reviewing financial contract obligations from the acquired company. “I found the work very interesting and felt I was adding value to the organization,” he remembers.
After graduation, Delgado accepted a permanent position with Abbott. And today he’s still with us, a valued employee and Senior Finance Manager for Abbott Diagnostics.
“Growing up, I never imagined the opportunities I would have working for a company like Abbott,” said Delgado. “In my years here, I have had the opportunity to work in sites across the country and around the world.” Joe Kosinski is still a mentor, and today, as co-captains of a recruiting team, the two work together to recruit the next generation of interns from DePaul.
DIVERSE, INCLUSIVE AND GLOBAL
In 2013, we hosted 167 interns in the U.S., based primarily at Abbott locations in north suburban Chicago; Columbus, Ohio; the San Francisco Bay Area and Southern California; Dallas, Texas; and Massachusetts. Worldwide, we hosted another 651 interns in global markets, including China, India, the Philippines, Singapore, Indonesia, Japan, Egypt, Germany, the United Kingdom, Ireland, Indonesia, Russia, Turkey, Italy, France, the Netherlands, Spain, Brazil, Canada and Mexico. In 2013, half of our interns were women, and 47 percent were minorities.
