Back/Spine
Back pain is one of the most common medical problems, affecting an estimated four out of five adults at some point in their lives. Back pain can range from a dull muscle ache to a sharp, stabbing pain, to limited flexibility. It can affect any part of the spine, from the lower back to the neck. It can be the result of trauma from an accident or injury that causes sudden stress on the bones and tissues of the spine, or it can develop slowly as part of aging and its associated changes to the spine.
Most back pain gets better with home treatment, such as bed rest. Your physician may also suggest over-the-counter medications to relieve pain and inflammation. Treatments for chronic back pain, which is pain that persists for more than three months, may include over-the-counter and prescription medicines, physical therapy and exercise, and in some cases, surgery. Surgery is often a last resort, reserved for chronic back pain that has not responded to other treatments. These conditions may include trauma-related fractures, severe scoliosis, herniated discs, bulging discs and degenerative disc disease. The purpose of surgery, which often involves implants, is to relieve pain and restore stability to the spine. Minimally invasive, non-fusion technologies are quickly being developed to assist in performing surgeries with smaller incisions, more precision, less damage to surrounding tissue and faster recovery times.
