Rheumatoid arthritis (RA), psoriatic arthritis (PsA) and ankylosing spondylitis (AS) are known as “autoimmune” diseases. In automimmune disease, your body’s own immune system mistakenly attacks healthy tissue, causing inflammation that can damage your joints. RA is not a condition of wear and tear of the joints (like osteoarthritis). With RA, the immune system attacks cells in the joints, causing pain and swelling and, over time, may affect mobility. PsA is a chronic disease that combines the symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis, including joint pain and inflammation, with those of psoriasis, a chronic skin condition characterized by areas of itchy, scaly and sometimes, inflamed skin. AS is a type of arthritis that affects the spine and can be potentially disabling.
