PRODUCTS & INNOVATION
Chris Thomas, Ph.D., is a research fellow and director of biosensor technology in Abbott’s diabetes care business, currently based in Witney, England. Dr. Thomas has dedicated his career to helping improve glucose testing for people with diabetes – focusing primarily on ending the use of routine finger pricks for day-to-day glucose measurements and treatment decisions.
For more than a decade, Dr. Thomas has worked to develop wearable technology-based products that use sensors painlessly placed on the back of the upper arm, to provide glucose levels. Dr. Thomas’ work has focused on development of the sensor technology, the processes, and the user-experience design necessary to make a glucose-monitoring device. The technology he helped pioneer is used today in Abbott’s revolutionary FreeStyle Libre* system.
Dr. Thomas holds patents for numerous technologies and techniques he helped develop that enable factory calibration. In recognition of his contributions, the company named him as a research fellow in Abbott’s Volwiler Society, a group of the most distinguished scientists at the company.
Dr. Thomas earned his bachelor’s degree in chemistry at the University of California, Los Angeles, and a doctorate in chemistry at the University of Florida.
