Abbott Global AIDS Care
- Through our comprehensive and strategic approach, Abbott and the Abbott Fund are at the forefront of addressing the HIV/AIDS pandemic in the developing world. To date, Abbott Global AIDS Care programs have helped almost 600,000 children and their families and provided more than 65 million HIV tests at no profit.
Since 2000, Abbott and The Abbott Fund have been at the forefront of addressing the HIV/AIDS pandemic in the developing world. The Abbott Global AIDS Care program employs a comprehensive and strategic approach to fighting against HIV/AIDS. Our efforts cover four fronts:
- Prevention of mother-to-child transmission of HIV (PMTCT): We donate a rapid HIV test to identify pregnant women who test positive for HIV. This program supports early diagnosis and treatment of HIV-positive women so that they may deliver HIV-negative babies.
- Expanding access to testing and treatment: We provide HIV/AIDS tests and treatment at no-profit prices. These discounted products significantly increase access to testing and treatment for patients in 69 developing countries.
- Supporting children affected by HIV/AIDS: We provide medical treatment for children living with HIV/AIDS and support for vulnerable children who have lost parents to the disease.
- Health care systems improvement: Working in concert with host governments, we fund the strengthening of health care systems, infrastructure and capacity desperately needed in resource-poor countries.
To date, Abbott Global AIDS Care programs have:
- Served more than 700,000 children and their families
- Provided more than 100 million HIV tests at no profit
- Improved HIV services at more than 90 sites across Tanzania, including building a new treatment center and clinical laboratories at the country's largest hospital
- Undertaking modernization of all 23 regional hospital laboratories in Tanzania
- Supported a model pediatric HIV treatment program that reduced mortality rates by 90 percent; this model is now being expanded across Africa
The next five years will bring new challenges and a deepening of our commitment to the battle against HIV/AIDS. Using our cumulative knowledge and experience, we will expand the care and treatment of the most vulnerable segment of society, children living with HIV/AIDS. By 2012, we plan to:
- Donate more than 10 million HIV tests to support the PMTCT program.
- Test and counsel 500,000 people.
- Treat and care for 50,000 children, who will represent 15 percent of patients within our treatment programs.
- Assist 1 million families and vulnerable children through The Abbott Fund programs that support education and health care.
