Abbott and DNDi Partner to Boost Innovation for Neglected Tropical Diseases

  • Partnership announced in connection with coordinated global effort by industry, Gates Foundation, WHO and others

January 2012

Abbott and the not-for-profit R&D organization Drugs for Neglected Diseases initiative (DNDi) announced a new partnership to advance research to find new treatments for neglected tropical diseases (NTDs), a group of infections that disproportionately affect poor populations around the world. Through this collaboration, DNDi and Abbott scientists will focus initial efforts on discovering and advancing novel antimicrobial agents with activity against Chagas disease, helminth infections, leishmaniasis and sleeping sickness.

Abbott’s collaboration with DNDi was announced in connection with a high-level meeting, “Uniting to Combat Neglected Tropical Diseases," held in London to announce a coordinated global effort to accelerate progress toward eliminating or controlling 10 NTDs by the end of the decade.  Abbott joined 12 other pharmaceutical companies, the U.S., UK and UAE governments, the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, the World Bank and other global health organizations in a united effort to defeat these diseases. The DNDi partnership and the London event are part of Abbott’s broader work to help address NTDs. In 2009, Abbott created an Executive Council for Neglected Diseases to coordinate efforts across the company to contribute innovative technologies, compounds for screening and scientific expertise.  The company's philanthropic foundation, the Abbott Fund, also supports programs to advance research and expand community education and outreach.
