Why Abbott is a LinkedIn Top Company

530 million LinkedIn users have spoken: They want to work at Abbott.

Strategy and Strength|Mar.21, 2018

Billions of actions from more than 530 million people on LinkedIn determine the 50 top companies where people want to work in the U.S. every year.

Health technology company Abbott – along with the likes of Amazon, Starbucks and Google – is one of them. LinkedIn determined its list considering four ideas: interest in the company, engagement with the company’s employees, job demand and employee retention.

Every year, we evaluate how we can make our employee experience even better. Here's a snapshot of what it's like to work at one of the world's most admired companies, Abbott, why we think people apply here – and stay once they're hired.

Life-Changing Work at Abbott

Success is About the Whole You. We give employees the chance to build their best career, establish financial security and work-life balance for themselves and their families – and to know that they are doing life-changing work with some of the smartest (and coolest) people on the planet.

Taking Care of Our People. Abbott's Care Coordinators are actual human beings who get on the phone with our employees to offer support with healthcare-related questions. We also offer an Elder Care service for those who are taking care of their parents or older relatives, and a Torchlight program for parents with children who have exceptional needs, including learning disabilities, ADHD and Autism.

Keeping Healthcare Costs Down. Abbott goes far beyond medical and dental, but that's not to say those aren’t top-notch (and affordable), too. Our healthcare benefits include an option for employees free from premiums for those who complete a wellness assessment, which just takes minutes to do.

Planning for the Future. We care about our employees’ happiness now – and later. That's why we offer a 5 percent match if employees put 2 percent of their salary into a 401(k). Many of our employees are also eligible for a pension, something not many other companies can say today.

Family Matters. We offer specialized programs for people who want to adopt children (we give 2 weeks of paid leave for adoptive parents as well as $20,000 to help with the cost of adoption) and who are trying to conceive (we have a "family building" program for support and help). All in addition, of course, to our paid maternity and paternity leave programs.

Speak to the World. Want to learn French? We've got you. More than 10,000 of our employees have signed up for a free program that teaches employees a new language (regardless of the business need). One employee in Argentina said the classes helped her lose her "fear of speaking English" and another in Vietnam said the help with English improved his life and work. An employee in Russia said "learning new languages opens up new opportunities... it is one of the best ways for self-development."

'Life-changing' Development. Abbott launched its Global Citizen Development Program, which focuses on people who are not yet leading a team, but who have high potential. The program is six months long and includes three months of virtual learning on topics like cultural awareness, business acumen and project management.

Take Your Parents to Work. We've been known to invite our parents to work. A spin on "Bring Your Child to Work" day, Abbott employees from their 20s to their 60s loved the opportunity to show their parents where they work and the life-changing technologies they work on. The parents, who traveled from as far as South America to attend, loved it, too. Here's an article in the Chicago Sun-Times on Bring Your Mom to Work day, and a LinkedIn blog from one of our employees (our head of Investor Relations) who spoke at the dad event.

Get Paid to Move. In 2017, Abbott launched a new health and wellness app that rewards employees with gift cards for healthy behavior (want a new grill? Keep up those steps!). About 65 percent of employees and their spouses participate in the app, which helps participants track how well they eat, how much they exercise and how much they sleep while keeping them incentivized through cash-value rewards.

Growing Careers with AI: We launched Abbott’s first artificial intelligence-enabled career site to give employees an easy and personalized way to discover career and growth opportunities within Abbott.

And that's just scratching the surface.
