FDA Approves Abbott's FreeStyle Navigator Continuous Glucose Monitoring System
People with diabetes who want more control over their blood glucose can look to Abbott's FreeStyle Navigator Continuous Glucose Monitoring System, now approved in the U.S.
Designed to discretely and continuously measure glucose levels through a sensor in the back of the upper arm or abdomen, the FreeStyle Navigator system provides minute-by-minute information about which way and how quickly the user’s glucose (blood sugar) level is changing.
The FreeStyle Navigator system offers a number of key advances for people with diabetes:
- Glucose information is measured and transmitted once per minute to a pager-sized receiver, which can be clipped to a belt or carried in a pocket or purse.
- Audible or vibrating alarms alert the user before their glucose level becomes too high or too low.
- Five directional trend arrows help people understand if glucose is rising or falling.
- Historical data and glucose trend information are stored for up to 60 days.
- The sensor and transmitter are designed to accommodate showering, swimming, and a range of normal physical activities.
