Welcome to Abbott
And thank you for your interest in our company. You’re visiting us at a particularly noteworthy time. This year marks both the 125th anniversary of our founding by Dr. Wallace Abbott, and the beginning of a new chapter in that long history as, in many ways, a new company.
We’ve just completed the most significant transformation in our history— turning our portfolio of businesses into two leading, Fortune 200 corporations. Our former proprietary pharmaceuticals business is now AbbVie, a new leader in the biopharmaceutical industry. This makes Abbott a very different company than the one it has been for so long.
The new Abbott is:
One of the world’s most diverse major healthcare companies
We have four key businesses: diagnostics, medical devices, nutritional products, and branded generic pharmaceuticals. Our worldwide sales are very well balanced across these four segments, which are roughly equal in size.
One of the most global healthcare companies
About 70 percent of our sales are now outside the United States, with 40 percent coming from the fastest-growing economies. And that’s reflected in our employee population, with 65 percent of our approximately 70,000 colleagues working outside the United States, as well.
And one of the most customer-focused healthcare companies
Approximately 50 percent of our sales are now directly to patients and consumers, with the other half through health care professionals.
So, at 125 years of age, Abbott has remade itself—again. But the core of our company—our values—is unchanged. Our purpose is the same one Dr. Abbott had when he began our work: improving lives. We do this through medical science and the life-changing technologies we create. But we do it, as well, by being a premier employer, a good neighbor, a responsible global citizen and, consequently, a superior investment. We’re committed to keep serving these values, and the people who depend on us, for the next 125 years.
