Dr. Alexander (Alex) Carterson joined Abbott in 2018 to manage global medical, scientific and clinical affairs for Transfusion Medicine.
Prior to joining Abbott, Alex served as executive site lead and medical director of Heartland Blood Centers, part of Versiti.
Alex received his bachelor’s in science from the University of Michigan, his Ph.D. in Microbiology and Immunology from Tulane University School of Medicine, and his Medical Doctorate from Tulane University School of Medicine. He completed his residency training at Harvard Medical School in Anatomical and Clinical Pathology. Additionally, he completed two Harvard fellowships in Transfusion Medicine and Hematopathology. He is board certified in Clinical Pathology and Transfusion Medicine.
Alex serves on the board of trustees for the Chicago chapter of the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. He is a member of AABB Cellular Therapies Standards Committee, and the International Society of Blood Transfusion (ISBT) working party on Transfusion-Transmitted Infections, parasite and virology groups.
