Abbott employees around the world are working to have a positive impact in our communities.

Creating a healthy, sustainable future means working to support the planet we all share. At Abbott, sustainability is reflected in our operations, our goals and our culture, as we continue to work to make a difference every day.

Our global teams work to contribute to positive environmental practices by conserving energy and water, minimizing waste and improving packaging for our products. That mission is not only embedded into our everyday operations, but it is also within employee-led efforts that combine innovation, collaboration and volunteerism to help support the environment where we live and work.

Employee-Led Environmental Impact

Here are just a few ways Abbott employees are making a difference:

  • Pollinator Support: Sites in Ireland, Poland and the U.S. have planted pollinator-friendly gardens and installed beehives. In Ireland, we established two urban beehives, with sales from the processed honey supporting local charities. At Abbott's headquarters in Abbott Park, Ill., we installed bee boards, which are specialized boards that mimic a hive’s honeycombs to help support solitary bee populations.

Grounds supervisor in Abbott Park, Lucas Wirtz, has been involved in ongoing educational walks to discuss the bee boards and their importance for solitary bee populations and supporting local ecosystems.

“Bee boards are a simple yet powerful way to support bee populations, which play a critical role in pollination and environmental balance,” said Wirtz. “By installing bee boards, we create safe habitats to help these essential pollinators thrive.”
  • Habitat Conservation and Restoration: Abbott Park has designated Wildlife Habitat Council Conservation certified habitats, with the first certification obtained in 1999. Abbott volunteers have been working to help preserve the Prairie White Fringed Orchid at Abbott Park and adjacent properties since 1995.

In Mexico City, colleagues cleaned a canal and planted native flowers to revitalize a local ecological park; in Chile, employee volunteers planted trees in a drought-impacted sanctuary; and in Costa Rica, they helped clear trails in a national park.
  • Water Stewardship: Abbott is a proud member of the Alliance for Water Stewardship. In Spain, our site donated containers to help irrigate trees and support recycling efforts. In California, employees partnered with a waste company to provide compost to a local winery, improving soil health and reducing waste.

These efforts reflect the creativity and commitment of Abbott employees worldwide. Every action, big or small, can help contribute to conserving natural resources and promoting sustainability.

Abbott’s 2030 Sustainability Plan

At Abbott, sustainability means managing our company to deliver long-term impact for the people we serve. Abbott’s 2030 Sustainability Plan centers on improving global health and helping societies thrive, while driving progress on environmental goals.

We're working across our operations and with key suppliers to sustainably manage our water use, reduce carbon emissions and expand renewable energy. We also work to reduce the environmental impact of our product packaging and minimize waste through reuse and recycling programs.

Abbott was recently recognized by Newsweek as one of America’s Greenest Companies for 2026, a recognition of our ongoing work to help create a healthier environment, including in the communities where we operate.
