Innovation at Abbott isn’t a catchphrase – it’s a way of life. We foster an environment for our scientists that not only promotes innovation, but protects it. Fiercely. Those who dedicate themselves to solving some of healthcare’s biggest problems have the freedom and incentives to continue inventing and creating throughout their careers.
Great ideas come from all over the world. We established new research and development facilities in Brazil and China this year, adding to our more than 40 existing sites across 20 countries. In China, we spent $50 million to launch the facility in Shanghai that will be central for development of breakthrough diagnostics and nutrition products.
Our investment in innovation landed us on the Clarivate (formerly part of Thomson Reuters) 2016 Top 100 Global Innovators list.
"Abbott fosters innovation with a dedicated science track that allows scientists to rigorously explore ideas and insights," said Rachael Buck, PhD, Associate Research Fellow at Abbott. "It's an ideal innovation track to translate ideas and ultimately deliver the best products to the market place."
Last year, Abbott brought to market inventions that are changing people's lives all over the world. We took on issues of diabetes and malnutrition, introducing a glucose monitoring device that eliminates the need for routine fingersticks and an infant formula that is closer to breast milk than ever before. These innovations propelled us to additional recognition in Popular Science and Science Magazine.
They also impacted real people’s lives – people like Phyllis Camp, who can work in her flower garden again, go to work again, and Jen Grieves who now can cycle up the mountainous terrain of Northern England with the security of continuous monitoring of her glucose levels.
The prestigious Top 100 Global Innovators list, in its sixth year, determined the top 100 companies based on their commitment to innovation, the protection of ideas and the commercialization of inventions.
So, here's to the scientists – the managers, the marketers, the salespeople, the manufacturers and so many others who make Abbott’s innovation successes possible. With the recent addition of St. Jude Medical, we've got a whole lot more coming in 2017, too.
